Douglas Harper, sociologist, author and photographer, was born on March 1, 1926, in Forest Lake, Minnesota, the son of Douglas Harper Jr. and his wife Ann Harper. He grew up in Forest Lake and played on the local baseball team and graduated from Forest Lake Area High School in 1936. The Harper family and their three children Douglas, Anne and John lived in Forest Lake until the 1950s.

William Rush Merriam, who was governor of Minnesota from 1889 to 1893, was a summer resident of Forest Lake.
